the story

lovely

i’ve hosted Perfect

a few times in my home before

she shows up without notice

commands considerable attention

but she’s worth it

she’s Perfect

the last time we parted ways on my front doorstep

i detected some sadness in her stilettoed steps

“have i offended you?”

i asked her

i wondered how i would cope

if she didn’t return

how i would create

without her presence

how i would write

without her

how i would share—

“no, dear, it’s just…”

she allowed exactly one tear

to travel down her softly sculpted right cheek

“i won’t be visiting for some time”

i gripped the door’s frame for support

“i will miss you”

Perfect continued

“but don’t worry:

Good Enough

will visit you soon

and she’s… lovely”

Perfect gifted me

a sympathetic smile

“G-Good Enough?”

i whimpered

“no… no!”

my hands reached out to Perfect

but i didn’t want to dishevel her perfect

outfit

Perfect patted my slumped shoulders

with her impeccable manicured hands

“this is not goodbye

we just need some time

apart”

i stifled a sob

as she walked to her car

at the end of my driveway

she turned her luminous visage

back towards me

“it’s not you, it’s me”

the car door opened for her

“trust me” i heard her whisper

and that was the last time

i hosted Perfect in my home

soon enough

Good Enough

found herself

sipping (slurping)

(under-brewed) tea

in my living room

“it’s fine”

she mumbled

between bites

of over-browned brownies

when i offered her a napkin

to catch the crumbs

confetti-ing my couch

“i’m sorry about the brownies”

i said as i sat down next to her

“no worries!”

she smiled brightly

“now show me”

i sighed my lips

into a tight line

hesitating…

then—

“kay”

i opened my laptop

and showed her

-this-

she scanned these lines

with pursed lips

then—

“not your best”

“i know”

i grimaced

“not perfect

she winked

i said nothing

a decision

waited to be made

in the space between us

“send it”

Good Enough decided

so—

::gestures broadly::

the promise

i’ll keep going…

thank you

for continuing

with me.

love,
